Tommy got his start in the camera department as a teenager working for his father, cinematographer Paul Lohmann of Nashville, Silent Movie, and North Dallas Forty fame, and worked his way up to camera operator, steadicam operator, and director of photography. He has worked with such directors as Robert Altman (Kansas City), Ang Lee (Ride with the Devil + Hulk), Spike Jones (Adaptation), Jim Sheridan (Brothers), Michel Gondry (Human Nature), Terry George (Academy Award-winning The Shore), and J.J. Abrams (Undercovers) among others. He shot the Nash Bridges reboot as well as Women of the Movement where he worked with directors Tina Mabry, Julie Dash, and Kasi Lemmons. He has directed episodes of 13 Reasons Why and Secrets + Lies as well as co-directed, along with Tim Busfield, the award winning short film One Smart Fellow.
